FGM/C is a human rights violation and is recognized as a form of torture. It perpetuates harmful gender norms and limits a girl’s agency over her sexual and reproductive health. The harm inflicted is both physical and emotional, and can be lifelong. The CT Coalition to End FGM/C is raising awareness of the impact of FGM/C on women and girls, and is building support for legislation that will protect all of Connecticut’s girls from this form of harm.
OUR PROPOSED LEGISLATION WILL END FGM/C BY:
Ensuring that partnerships between Connecticut’s state departments and agencies to prevent FGM/C and to protect and provide assistance to victims of FGM/C are developed
Ensuring that health service providers are trained to recognize the risk factors associated with FGM/C and the signs that an individual may be a victim of FGM/C.
Ensuring that state agencies partner with experts on working with victims of FGM/C to provide training, materials, and other services as necessary
Ensuring that those who practice FGM/C in Connecticut face appropriate repercussions for their actions
